Suddenly, 30-40 people draped in saffron attire and wearing “Modi For PM” caps surrounded our vehicle and started to shout slogans to provoke us. Seeing themselves failing, they started to bang the front glass. Don’t lose me here on! Left confused about what was happening, I tried to see through the mob for Police help but all that I could see as far as my eyes allowed was a saffron mob. I could only see cracks developing in the front glass. The cracks were only getting prominent with each passing second and the sloganeering more abusive. By now, our car was stuck in the middle of a road with hundreds of people yet none with us. One BJP supporter came by driver’s side and started hitting him on face. When I tried to reach out to him for help, I heard the sound of my own gate opening and felt someone pulling me from my collar from the side. Meanwhile, the others barged into the tempo from behind and tore away all the posters, picked up all the campaigning materials and right in front of our eyes threw everything into the drain right there placing his leader on the
pedestal of the God with the “Har Har Modi” slogan. Read More
Reliance has yesterday issued notice to the government seeking arbitration on the Gas Price issue. On the eve of the election results, Reliance now says that it is not happy with the price of $8.40/MMBTU notified by the government (which has been stayed for the time being by the election commission till the elections are over) and wants more. It seeks to get from gas fields owned by the people of India (for which Reliance is merely a contractor) a price equal to the price at which Gas is being imported into India in Refrigerated LNG ships (around 16$ as they claim).

A wide section of residents, cutting across class, caste and politics, told The Citizen reporters that the tension was immense, and they would remain worried until Modi and his men finished the yatra that they had embarked upon through the congested mohallas of the city, and finally went home. The almost unruly crowds struck fear through Varanasi and gave the residents a taste of what to expect if Modi and the RSS/BJP’s will was thwarted at any level. The mobs shouted for the removal of the Varanasi District Magistrate, and against the Commission that BJP leaders described as “timid or biased or both”. Read More
Suddenly a roar went up, as Modi sympathisers lunged after him shouting ‘pagal, pagal’ (mad/mad). A little distance ahead I saw another man wearing the AAP cap. The crowd spotted him too, and ran after them both, gesticulating, heckling. As I start walking quickly towards the men I saw them, seemingly unperturbed, walk right through the charging hoard, not a sign of nervousness about their gait. They were walking the confident walk of men who know no fear.
Half an hour later, some young BJP supporters standing on the raised platform dividing the street, turned and collectively pointed at a man and a woman walking past, also wearing AAP caps. Again the crowd roared at them: Modi, Modi. Once again I saw no fear, no rush to escape the hostility on the part of the targets. A vegetable vendor wearing AAP topi going through the crowds was sneered at. A scooterist was shouted at. Read More
